They unanimously agreed that the Sharks' defense has improved significantly from last season, with one scout describing it as "closer to average." Another scout went as far as to say the Sharks are "100% in the playoffs discussion," while a third scout labeled their defense as "borderline playoff corps."
What makes this particularly fascinating is the age and contract situation of Nurse and Trouba. Both players are in their 30s and signed for four more years, which raises questions about their long-term impact. However, the scouts I spoke with believe these veterans are still legitimate top-four defensemen and upgrades over previous incumbents.
The Impact of Nurse and Trouba
"Trouba is a defensive stalwart," one scout noted. "He brings size, physicality, and a reliable shot." On the other hand, Nurse, while not as physical as one might expect, possesses the ability to contribute offensively.
